What to pack for a Spiti Valley trip?

Planning for Spiti Valley? Here is a checklist of important items you should have in your bag:

Medicines

  • Dimox - A temporary relief medicine to be taken if you are hit by AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness)
  • ORS - Weather is cold in Spiti and you feel less thirsty. It is good to mix ORS in your water bottle and keep drinking it to keep yourself hydrated. Dehydration can lead to AMS
  • Move Spray - Pain relief if you get hurt on stony terrain
  • Band-Aid, Cotton, Dettol and Betadine - A quick first-aid if you get hurt
  • Kapoor - Keeping Kapoor in handkerchief and slowly inhaling it can provide relief from AMS
  • Eno/Digene - For acidity

Clothes

  • Base Layer, Fleece and -5 °C  Rated Winter Jacket - Spiti is a cold desert, and it can get really cold at night, but also equally hot during the day. So, it is essential to have 3 layers of clothing for comfortable journey. Have at least a pair of Base Layers because you will not get opportunity to wash clothes or have a bath
  • 2+ pairs of socks
  • Woollen gloves
  • Sunglasses - Absolute must if you want to see anything during the day
  • Caps - Only sunglasses will not protect you from getting a sun-burn. Have a cap too
  • Trekking/Sports Shoes - Trekking shoes are good to have, but not necessary. Sports shoes will also be enough

Accessories

  • Jio / BSNL Sim - BSNL works in many places. Jio works in Kaza only. No other network’s coverage is there
  • Multi Plug - Home-stays often have limited charging points. Good to have a multi-plug handy
  • Lotion - Absolute must, your skin will run dry very quickly in that weather
  • Cold cream
  • Sunscreen - Absolute must
  • Lip Balm
  • Dry Wipes - To clean yourself, as you will not get many chances to have a bath
  • Deodorant - To smell good when you haven’t had bath for days 😂
  • Powerbanks
  • Offline Maps - If you are self-driving
  • Jerry Can with extra fuel - If you are self-driving
  • Tissues and Sanitiser

Miscellaneous

  • Chocolates and Snacks to munch on - Sometimes drives in Spiti can be long and without eating options
  • Cash - Carry enough cash (about Rs 10,000 per person). Don’t rely on ATMs or online payment options
  • Water Bottles - Carry at least two 1 ltr water bottles. Keep drinking water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Lack of water can lead to AMS
